ABOUT THIS COURSE

Geoinformatics is the blend of various technologies, namely, GIS, remote  sensing, photogrammetry, cartography, GPS and geodesy. It is  fundamental to all the disciplines, which use data identified by their  locations. Geoinformatics deals with spatial and non-spatial data, their  methods of acquisition, management, analysis, display, and  dissemination. Applications of geoinformatics are mainly oriented to  solve real world problems pertaining to natural and man-made  environments.

 The six month Post Graduate Diploma in Geoinformatics aims to provide  conceptual knowledge on GIS, remote sensing and related fields, and  hands-on training in GIS, remote sensing data interpretation, digital  image processing, digital photogrammetry, digital cartography, webGIS,  GPS,2D and 3D drafting. The course contents have been designed after an  exhaustive research keeping in view the emerging trends in the field of  Geoinformatics as well as the current industry requirements.

  • Understanding Map :  Introduction to Map and GIS, Projection, its types & uses, coordinate systems used in GIS softwares and its purposes.

  • Working with Geospatial data : Geospatial data types and model, concept of DBMS, Query  expressions-Vector and raster based queries, Spatial data editing,  Geospatial data analysis. Introduction to web GIS.

  • Ground truth data and Global Positioning system (GPS) :- Geospatial data types and model, concept of DBMS, QuerIntroduction to  Ground truth: its need and advantages, Techniques of collecting ground  control points, Basics of GPS, Applications of GPS.y expressions-Vector  and raster based queries, Spatial data editing, Geospatial data  analysis. Introduction to web GIS.   

  • Remote Sensing, its principles, concept and working:-
    Concept of Remote sensing, its evolution as well as current trends,  Basic principles of remote sensing, Electromagnetic spectrum,types of  remote sensing, concept of sensor, platform and satellite,  characteristics of image, thermal remote sensing, microwave remote  sensing. 

  • Digital Image Processing (DIP) :  Understanding digital image processing and image processing softwares,  Importing raw data, Pre and post image processing techniques. 

  •  Introduction to Photogrammetry & LIDAR:-  
    Introduction, Development of photogrammetry, Classification of  photogrammetry,Satellite image vs. aerial photo interpretation,  development of interpretation keys. Mapping terrain elements, Types of photograph errors and  rectification.Introduction Lidar, its principles data types and  application. 

  • Introduction to various 2D/3D drafting software :
    Hands on drafting softwares, converting file formats and work in different platform, 2D and 3D mapping.  

  • Project execution based on GIS : Planning a project, Implementation of a project, Management of a project.
