Slope measures the rate of change of elevation at a surface location. Slope may be expressed as percent slope or degree slope. Percent slope is 100 times the ratio of rise (vertical distance) over run (Horizontal distance), whereas degree slope is the arc tangent of the ratio of rise over run. In GIS software slope map are created with the help of DEM data. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) is a specialized database that represents the relief of a surface between points of known elevation. By interpolating known elevation data from sources such as ground surveys and photogrammetric data capture, a rectangular digital elevation model grid can be created. Slope map can be automatically calculated using DEM or it can also be generated with the help of contours. The present slope map is of area around Dehradun and it has been created by generating contours using DEM image.
